Foraging Etiquette

Mushroom foraging largely takes place on public land, a shared resource that deserves our respect and caring to maintain.

Rules that apply everywhere

Respect private property by only foraging in public spaces or with permission on private land

Keep our forests clean!  Don't leave any trash behind and carry out any you find while hunting

Raking is generally not allowed and can have negative impacts on mushrooms and organisms living in that soil, instead wait for mushrooms to become visible

Leave some mushrooms behind to spore and reproduce, especially very small/young mushrooms that still need time to grow

Only collect multiple mushrooms if you are sure you are going to eat them, a single specimen is all you need to identify at home

Check with forest management before visiting a recent fire site and be sure to give back to any nearby communities

Cutting the mushroom at the base (rather than pulling it from the ground) is recommended for all mushrooms that don't require visual inspection of the underground portions for identification
